Motor Competence in Children Aged 6–12 Years. Cross-Sectional Associations with Age, Sex, and Skill Component

Early childhood (2–7 years) is a critical period for motor development, during which children acquire fundamental movement skills (FMS) that underpin later activity-specific skills. Although competence in FMS generally improves with age, substantial inter- and intra-individual variability exists in the timing and rate of FMS acquisition. Examining levels of competence in FMS in typically developing elementary school children can inform educational practice and intervention planning.
