Biomechanical Analysis of the Postures Adopted by the Surgeons and Ergonomics Evaluation of the Musculoskeletal Effort in Laparoscopy

Abstract
Poster presentation investigating localized muscle fatigue and its relation to the postures adopted by laparoscopic surgeons. Fifteen surgeons were recorded with a video-based optoelectronic system and surface EMG of the middle deltoid and upper trapezius muscles bilaterally during laparoscopic procedures. The Joint Analysis of EMG Spectrum and Amplitude (JASA) procedure revealed that 26% of muscle registries showed fatigue, most often in the upper trapezius, with a significant positive correlation between trapezius/deltoid muscle activity and shoulder elevation and elbow angle on the right side, confirming that surgeons suffer localized muscle fatigue — mainly in the trapezius — likely due to sustained low-intensity, long-duration muscle activation.
